The Farmer's Supply hardware store in Floyd, Virginia closed in 2020 after operating for nearly a century under generations of The Lawson family. The first floor now houses two local businesses (Phoenix Hardwoods and Lichen or Knot). The upper floors were transformed into a self-service hotel with five apartments; the hotel operates under the historic name "The Farmer's Supply".

A Main Street Landmark Since 1897

The iconic building has a history that stretches back well before it was ever a hardware store. Constructed in 1897, it originally served as a mercantile store and butcher's shop run by Thomas B. Huff and Horatio Howard. In 1920, the building took on a new identity: The Farmer's Supply, a hardware and general merchandise store supplying the surrounding community. The Lawson family took over management of the building and the store from there, running it for close to 100 years. Generations of Floyd residents knew the building for its hardware store and its iconic sign — "The Farmer's Supply Corp" — still visible on the building's exterior today.

What the Building Is Today

When the Farmer's Supply Corp hardware store closed in 2020, the space was reimagined as a home for creative local businesses. Floyd, Va has increasingly become a hot Blue Ridge Mountain getaway for Virginia, DC and North Carolina markets. There is so much to do here (cycling, mountain biking, hiking, and leaf-peeping in the fall), and with so many events (Floydfest, YogaJam, Tour de Floyd, The Friday Night Jamboree), it seemed logical to turn the upper floors of the old building into lodging for Floyd's many visitors. The Farmer's Supply self-service hotel was a natural transformation of the old space. 

Guests today can book a stay using a private access code, enjoying modern comfort inside a building that has anchored Main Street for well over a century.

Same Name, New Chapter

The Farmer's Supply self-service hotel represents a new chapter for a building that has seen its share of history. The name carries forward the memory of the Lawson family's nearly hundred-year run, while giving the building new life as a place for travelers to stay in the middle of everything Floyd has to offer.
